Location

If Fold Cottage was a cow shed you might well fancy staying in it as its location, in the small, unspoilt village of Outgate, just off the B5286, is brilliant. You can see it on the map or satellite image below. (Ignore the location shown on the Wheelwrights website; they show us as being over the road which is actually the Old Post Office!) We've got Coniston Water to the southwest and Windermere to the east, a short and delightful walk away. The picturesque Beatrix Potter countryside and the pretty, historic village of Hawkshead lie to the south, within short walking distance. To the north are the rugged mountains of the Langdale valley and all sorts of other delights - Little Langdale, Grasmere, Rydal Water, Helvelyn ...

For all that Fold Cottage has a peaceful country setting, it is only 4 miles from Ambleside. Other Lake District locations are also easily accessible from the cottage by road:

Hawkshead - 1.5 miles

Coniston - 4.5 miles

Grasmere - 7 miles

Dungeon Ghyll, Langdale - 8 miles

Windermere - 9 miles

Patterdale - 12 miles

Kendal - 17 miles

Keswick - 20 miles

Most people come by car but it is reasonably easy to get here by public transport (train and bus); sometimes we do just that. The regular bus service between Ambleside and Hawkshead passes through the village and the number 505 goes all the way to Windermere where it stops by the railway station and Booths supermarket.

Of course, you may just want to stay in Outgate, enjoyed the Fold Cottage garden, potter round the lanes and paths of the locality and maybe take a stroll into Hawkshead, or down to the shore of Windermere, or have a pint at the village inn. You could do worse!
